Remember the controversial Cingular iPhone ad that I claimed was used in a private Pinecone Research consumer survey to test price points for the iPhone? Well the results of that survey may help explain today’s news that AT&T might offer $50 to $150 iPhone rebates.

Research firm iSuppli’s checks with iPhone component makers suggest that the iPhone may be experiencing software problems, as evidenced by Apple’s redistribution of resources last week from the now-delayed Leopard OS to the iPhone.

“We’re hearing it’s mostly an issue with the complexity of the device,” said iSuppli analyst Jagdish Rebello. Rebello said Apple is dealing with problems discovered late in the testing phase.

iPhone Universal Remote

Apple recently filed for a patent that would turn a mobile phone into a “universal remote control [that] needs no special knowledge about the appliance,” according to the patent filing.

Basic concept drawings (shown right - click the image for a larger view) show a device shaped much like Apple’s iPhone.

That means you might be able to use your iPhone to control your TV and computer, to navigate through PowerPoint slide show presentations, and even to maneuver through Apple’s iTunes store.

“The mobile phone can be used to control popular programs such as iTunes,” Apple wrote in the patent filing.

The question is will this feature be available on the iPhone in June or will we have to wait for iPhone 2.0?

Contrary to the speculations of many around the blogosphere, Apple will not release the iPhone on June 11, as evidenced by Apple’s statement yesterday announcing the Leopard OS delay.

“iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned,” said the press release (emphasis mine).

When CNET reported that a Cingular customer service rep. said iPhone would be released June 11, I called 25 Cingular stores to see what they had to say, and none knew of the June 11 release date.

Unless June 11 is “late June,” it seems my suspicions have been confirmed: the iPhone will not come out June 11.

Dear Canadian iPhone enthusiasts,

I know I’ve been juggling your emotions around with this whole Rogers Wireless deal.

First I said Rogers would be the exclusive iPhone carrier in Canada.

Then I announced that the wireless company had changed its mind and denied that they would be Canada’s iPhone provider.

Now, O’Grady’s PowerPage is reporting that a customer service rep. at Rogers Wireless said the company “will be carrying the iPhone and will actually function as the exclusive Apple iPhone carrier.”
