Rumor: iOS4 to Hit Between 9 AM to 10 AM Cupertino Time

A Twitter search brings up a post by razurianfly claiming the iOS4 update will hit iTunes in the next hour:

Text: “Expecting iOS4 to Hit Around 9:00 or 10:00AM Cupertino. Between 5:00 or 6:00PM London (BST).”

Razorianfly is the alias of Arron Hirst, a UK graphic designer. I wondered how he would know the release time of iOS4. After having a look at his Twitter stream, I found that he claims to have “a source, who I can’t name (for obvious reasons).” Time will tell if his prediction is correct.

Update iTunes Before Downloading iOS4

Be sure to update to iTunes 9.2 to be able to download iOS4. I just updated iTunes this morning, expecting to be able to download iOS4, but the iPhone update is still unavailable as of 11:55 AM EST.

If the rumor is correct, iOS4 will be available within the next hour. Will you be downloading the new iPhone update right away?

$100 iPhone Price Drop Soon? What’s Your Opinion?

When Apple dropped the iPhone price $200 last September, just two months after the iPhone’s release, some of you said you were okay with it because you willingly paid a premium to be an early adopter, while others of you were understandably frustrated because you would have delayed your iPhone purchase if you’d only known about the looming price reduction.

The latest rumor is that Apple will once again drop the iPhone price — this time by $100 — not long after releasing the 16GB iPhone just two weeks ago.

A tipster told 9to5Mac that news of the iPhone price reduction will come at a rumored Apple event in late February (where Apple may also release a software development kit for building native iPhone apps).

Word is that the 16GB iPhone will drop from $499 to $399, and the 8GB iPhone might be phased out altogether.

Why reduce the iPhone price?

Price drops such as these may help Apple meet its target of 10 million iPhone sales in 2008, while also making it possible to release a higher-priced 3G iPhone later this year.

But as we saw last September, they also run the risk of ticking off important customers. The last iPhone price drop was so controversial that Apple gave early adopters $100 Apple Store credits in an attempt to quell the outrage — but don’t count on another store credit the next time around.

So what do you think?

Would it upset you if Apple drops the iPhone price again soon? Do you think Apple would be blowing off its loyal customers with such a move, or are frequent price drops just a reality of the fast-moving technology industry?

Although I did pay $499 for a 16GB iPhone recently and I’ll be irked to see it drop in price so soon, I thought this 9to5Mac reader made a good point:

Touchscreen BlackBerry to Take On iPhone?

A Research in Motion (RIM) patent application points to the possibility of a touchscreen BlackBerry in the near future.

Because the patent application was published only four months after it was filed, as opposed to the typical 18-month waiting period, it’s possible that the production of a touchscreen BlackBerry could be right on the horizon.

The first line of the patent’s abstract reads:

A touchscreen liquid crystal display, method for using a liquid crystal display as a user input, and a mobile electronic device are provided.

Could it be a fake?

A commenter on ZDNet suggests that RIM could just be “spin doctoring” in an attempt to throw off its competitor, Apple.

Would RIM really want to make a touchscreen BlackBerry? Many of the BlackBerry owners I know say they prefer their hardware keyboards as opposed to iPhone’s virtual keyboard.

Some people just dont like the lack of tactile feedback on the iPhone, whether it’s because they have pudgier fingers or because it’s harder to text without looking.

BlackBerry’s edge over iPhone is that it can cater to those customers who prefer traditional hardware on their phones. If RIM were to venture into Apple’s touchscreen territory, they might alienate those customers who like their classic keyboards, and then they’d have to compete with Apple head-on.

Is a touchscreen BlackBerry imminent?

ZDNet’s Russell Shaw thinks so, but I’m not quite sure.

iPhone RSS Reader Revealed [Rumor]

Go to http://reader.mac.com and you’ll find a photo of an iPhone with what looks like a list of feeds on the display, along with a note that says: “This Application Is Viewable Only On iPhone.”

Is Apple’s iPhone actually equipped with an RSS reader? If so, that’s a useful add-on that I’ll really appreciate having at my fingertips.

Leaked: Alleged iPhone Sales Training Manual

A member of the MacRumors Forums, cindynjgirl79, scanned pages of what looks like a sales training workbook on the iPhone for AT&T’s employees.

Some highlights, quoted from the MacRumors story:

Revolutionary Mobile Phone (scan 1, scan 2)

- Dial any telephone number with the touch of a finger
- Create and manage a list of telephone numbers you call most
- If you choose to answer the call, the video will pause and resume once the call ends
- iPhone syncs contact information from the computer to iPhone (from Address Book on a Mac or Outlook or Outlook Express on a Windows PC).
- Built-in speakerphone
- iPhone lets you carry on a phone conversation while you simultaneously browse the Internet or send an email.
- There is a vibrate mode.

Photos (scan 1, scan 2)

- Sync photos from Mac or PC

It’s worth noting that at least half of the pages from the training manual are missing. AT&T also said in the workbook that Apple may reveal additional features on the release date.

The lack of 3G, MMS messaging and Instant Messaging support in particular have caused a bit of a stir on the Engadget comments board.

Some commenters noted, though, that Apple may intend to keep the iPhone feature-light at first, after which firmware updates (perhaps via the iTunes store) will add in-demand features.

In fact, Apple said earlier this week that it will be able to add additional features to already-purchased iPhones.

iPhone to Feature More Google Apps?

Glenn Lurie, a leader in the iPhone project at AT&T who is actually using his own iPhone before the device’s debut, said in an interview that “There are other things â€” you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming â€” there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue,” leading many to believe that Google Maps won’t be the only Google widget on the iPhone.

Might this be evidence that Apple is “pulling their classic under-promise and over-deliver move in a bid to capture a larger share of the mobile phone market,” asks ZDNet’s Jason D. O’Grady.

This is an exciting possibility. I would love to see Google Notebooks, Google Calendar or even Gmail on the iPhone.

More added Google apps along with third-party software compatibility (which Apple said it’s “wrestling with“) will undoubtedly boost the iPhone’s chances of becoming an instant success, I think.

Rumor: Touchscreen iPod Coming Soon

An iPhone-esque touchscreen iPod could be unveiled as early as tomorrow, according to an unnamed ThinkSecret source.

There’s little, if any, evidence to back this up, and, as ThinkSecret points out: “it seems unlikely that Apple would seek to make an announcement that would draw attention away from its forthcoming iPhone launch.”

Nevertheless, I thought I should bring it to your attention, in case that it is true.

“What makes this new information at least partially plausible is that the touch-screen technology that the iPhone and future iPod will employ has already been perfected and finalized,” said ThinkSecret.

iPhone Non-Contract Prices Questionable

An AT&T store rep. told the blogger at Tekno Junkie that the iPhone would retail at a non-contract price of $899/$999 for the 4GB and 8GB phones.

The prices are worth noting, but as I’ve said before, I don’t trust store sales reps. so I’ll take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Photos Taken on an iPhone: All But Confirmed (See Proof)

Two photos presumably taken with an Apple iPhone surfaced on Flickr last Saturday, as revealed by MobileGuerilla.

There’s been ongoing speculation about whether the photos were actually taken on an iPhone. I looked into it and now have proof (or at least very strong evidence) that they were.

The photos have since been removed, but searching the Flickr member’s photo album for “Cupertino,” the location of Apple’s headquarters, reveals a photo of her office, and a “cupertino” tag in the right sidebar.

Further, the man in the first supposed iPhone photo (shown below) is Derrick Schneider, a programmer and author of the blog Obsession With Food. Click Derrick’s image on the right of his home page, and guess where it leads you: to the same Flickr album where the original iPhone photo was posted.

Schneider’s About page reveals another photo of him. Unless he has an identical twin, he is without a doubt the man in the iPhone photo.

A commenter on MobileGuerrilla said the background in the photo of Schneider suggests it was taken in “a steakhouse on Wolfe, at Vallco Mall, called ‘Alexanders’, in Cupertino, CA.”

That would explain this photo, which was also said to be taken with an iPhone:

Rumor: iPhone to Integrate with Apple’s Final Cut Server

This may not interest all of you, but there’s apparently a rumor going around that the iPhone will integrate with the Final Cut Server and act as a wireless video monitor for use in film production.

If true, a director going over lines with an actor could use the iPhone as a visual aid for viewing certain film clips. Multi-Media Me got word of the rumor. Not sure where it originated, so be skeptical, but if true this could be just one of many examples of how the iPhone could work with all kinds of Apple software to enhance the user experience.
