In response to criticism from environmental groups, especially Greenpeace, Steve Jobs announced Apple will reduce its waste and become more eco-friendly.

In an open letter posted on the Apple site, Jobs said the company will minimize its use of toxic chemicals like lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury in its new products.

To get rid of mercury, Apple will begin using LED displays rather than mercury-laden LCD ones as soon as “the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays.”

Additionally, Apple will extend its iPod recycling program to outside of the U.S., where it is now limited to.

I’m all for a more eco-friendly iPhone. How long until the iPhone goes green, you think? Will we have to wait for version 2.0?
