25 Things Wrong With the iPhone

[Update: This article was written when the original iPhone was first released. See my new post: 25 things STILL wrong with the iPhone.]

I love my iPhone, but it does lack some important features and functionality. That’s why I’ve put together this list of 25 fixes Apple should make to the iPhone.

Apple, if you read this, please consider these suggestions the next time you issue an iPhone update.

25 things wrong with the iPhone:

1. Can’t copy & paste text.

2. Except for the first and last SMS messages in a session, iPhone text messages lack timestamps.

3. iPhone’s Safari browser does not support Java or Flash, so you can’t watch videos (except for YouTube ones) or see parts of certain websites.

4. The on-screen keyboard can’t be used in landscape mode in applications other than Safari.

5. Vibrate mode for incoming text messages is weak.

6. Incoming text messages appear word-for-word on the screen upon receiving them, which may be a privacy issue for some. (Update: Here’s a sort of solution.)

7. No Undo function for when you’ve accidentally erased or mistyped text.

8. Scroll bars don’t appear in some text fields in the browser, and there are no arrow keys to maneuver through text.

9. Can’t save usernames and passwords in Safari.

10. The YouTube app does not allow you to view or post comments on videos.

11. Can’t download or save Word documents, PDF files, or any other file for that matter. Why not add a My Documents folder?

12. No spell check feature for web forms.

13. Can’t send more than one image in an email.

14. Except for in the Camera Roll, photos can’t be edited or removed directly from the iPhone. You have to edit them on your computer and then re-sync them.

15. The iPhone lacks a Find function for sorting through contacts, e-mails, calendar appointments, notes, etc.

16. Can’t update your Facebook status via iPhone’s Safari browser. Facebook is a fast-growing social network, so iPhone should support it. (Update: Facebook now has an iPhone version of the site, located at iphone.facebook.com)

17. No mass edit feature for handling calendar items, notes and e-mails.

18. Can’t search within web pages in the browser.

19. Its 3-day, expensive battery replacement plan.

20. Can’t highlight text.

21. Limited ringtones. Can’t set songs as ringtones. (Update: Apple now lets you convert some songs into ringtones via iTunes for $0.99 each.)

22. Difficult to rewind and fast-forward through long audio and video files (like audiobooks and TV shows or movies).

23. No AIM or iChat application.

24. One too many steps to dial a contact. (Update: In a software update, Apple added a feature that lets you double tap the home button to access your Favorites list of contacts.)

25. Because it is recessed, the headphone jack is incompatible with non-Apple headphones. Griffin’s headphone adapter can solve this problem.

Leave a comment and let me know what I should add to this list. For a full breakdown of the iPhone and its features (there are in fact things RIGHT with the iPhone!), check out my iPhone review.

*Bonus* – MORE things wrong with the iPhone

Here are a few more things wrong with the iPhone, as readers have pointed out in the comments below.

26. iPhone’s camera is archaic (no zoom, poor image stabilization, poor quality in low-lit areas).

27. No speed dial or voice dial functionality.

28. Cannot add attachments to emails.

29. Can’t use iPhone as a hard drive storage device, unlike the iPod.

30. Can’t change the sound notifications for email, voicemail, etc.

31. Can’t delete individual entries from the recent calls list without deleting them all, a potential privacy issue.

32. No 3G data speeds. EDGE is slow at times.

33. Cannot send photos via text messages.

34. Cannot send mass text messages. (Update: Apple added mass text messaging to the iPhone via firmware update 1.1.3)

35. iPhone lacks a video camera. (See my article on why mobile video is important)

36. No tasks or To-Do widgets.

37. No support for games.

38. Can’t disable auto-correct on the keyboard. Every time it makes a suggestion you don’t want, you have to tap X to cancel it, which can slow down typing a lot.

39. iPhone’s calculator lacks a backspace, so you have to clear the entire process if you accidentally touch an unintended digit.

What else? Leave a comment below & let us know.

Don’t forget to read my iPhone review for a more balanced look at the iPhone.

  2. Wow. Look at the date of the article. It was 100% accurate in 2007. But it apparently takes too much time to look at the post date. Of course this stuff is no longer valid 3 years later. Go figure.

  3. Whoever made this list is an idiot that didn’t do any research. At least half of these things can be changed in settings.

  4. not All of this. Still Weak a** Vibe, and no custom Email, voicemail, sent mail, or calendar alerts. Emaill is too quiet and email vibrate is a joke. I thought it would be cool when my work said they were switching us from blackberry to Iphone 4 but I miss being able to hear email alerts and have decent vibrate because I work in a very loud enviroment. (IE lots of PC’s like thousands)

  8. Sad that so many comments are fanboyish in that they unquestioningly support Apple instead of their peers, the consumers. Apple (or any company) won’t know or be pushed to improve their product if the customers don’t give them strong feedback.

    Think about it.

  9. wow, outdated. compare iphone 3gs with the latest update and you will see what’s the big fuss is all about. the 3gs pretty much covered all the flaws you listed. see if you can come up with a new flaw, but once again, you can ALWAYS come up with at least one if you want to.

    • This person must definitely have the old generation. Because everything they listed i can do with my 3GS. EVERYTHING. and u don’t have to pay for ringtones.. lol.. and i voice dial as well.. it gets better than voice dial. u can even tell your phone to play a certain song that you want to hear. or if you cant remember who sings it, all you have to do is say who sings this song? and it will tell you.. You seriously need to update your phone

  11. I’m not going to lie. I love revisiting these gloating dismissals of the iPhone, especially in light of it’s runaway success, the continual upgrades and the success of the App Store.

Basically, tech wankers of all stripes and loyalties simply could not get past their idiotic laundry lists of MUST HAVE features long enough to realize that the reason they cared so much about their laundry list of features was because up until the release of the iPhone, the smartphone *experience* was COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE!

  12. Millions are still buying it, in spite of all the wrongs.
There seems to be no other smart phones being scrutinized till this extent.
Pin-pointing the flaws may be easy but overall experience counts.

  13. No numeric key pad for texting.. allowing T9 predictive texting. Would make it possible to text with one hand quickly. Surely a simple update for Apple.

Do seem to sacrifice a lot of basic functionality to have an iPhone

  18. I have just recently been given an iPhone for Christmas (oh, alright I ordered it and my husband wrapped it) having had a pleasant few months experience with an iPod Touch. Contacts, calendar events etc are all important to me and that works fine.

I was therefore amazed to find that the iPhone doesn’t have the ability to retain some sort of visual notification on the screen (albeit dimmed) to show that a call has been missed or a text received. Every other mobile phone I’ve had has this functionality and I didn’t even think about it but presumed it would be on the iPhone – beacon to technology that it is. What a shame. It’s a pain for me because (as a woman) I don’t carry my iPhone around with me in a shirt or trouser pocket but often have it in my bag or on my desk, so after an hour’s meeting I’d much prefer to glance at my phone rather than have to click it every time to check for missed texts or calls. SO frustrating. Please add this to the list.

    Thanks.

Guys, i need to know if i should continue with my decision of buying this piece. I am disappointed it cannot support pdf files and some other applications. please is there any other phone better than the iphone?

  25. My Iphone 3G would be perfect if I lived in 2001! Unfortunately, I don’t, this is 2008! Apple iPhone 3G is completely & utterly useless for 2008 and the iTunes software, that the iPhone cannot operate without, … is absolute garbage! Both designed by money hungry, screw you for even cent scumbags without any itegrity! Let’s all watch Apple Inc. go down the corporate drain, just like we are now watching with Microsoft because of Vista! Will these morons ever start listening to their customers instead of just watching their market shares? Just like the complete & utter failure of Vista, eventually once the all the hype is over, most iPhone 3G users will realise they have been totally ripped off, not just with iPhone 3G but with the sheer & utter uselessness of iTunes!

I called iphone time and time again (hour here 2 hours there) and they don’t know what is wrong with it either I gave up Now I have a cracked screen from dropping it because it always slips out of my hands….too slippery
It also has a mind of its own when it locks out and is blank I push the button for it to light up to slide the bar and guess what? It doesn’t work it looks like it is turned off then when i put on the charger it will light up and then I can call someone before it goes off!but if the light goes off again and then locks me out again in order for me to have it light up I have to take it off the charger
When someone is calling it doesn’t even let me know who is calling nor can I slide the bar to answer
I HATE THIS PHONE AND NEVER WILL BUY ANOTHER ONE I’M GOING BACK TO BLACKBERRY!!!!!at least they have more features!!!

  33. There are solutions for many problems you mention here (f.ex. the auto correction: just install the fix called KB and bang you can enable and disable it, or the ringtones: just install iphoneringtonemaker and bang you can use any mp3 as a ringtone. Wanna send MMS? Just install SwirlyMMS and you can send and receive MMS in no time..) Most of the fixes are on the phone itself via installer it doesn1t require much time to install them. The iPhone is an incredible piece of device, in my opinion its one of the best phones on the market. PDA phones have so many problems, they are slow, they freeze, iPhone doesn’t. Everything you do with it just feels amazing. It’s easy to use and it’s pure quality. Apple improves iPhone pretty often, and very soon a new iPhone will come out in which you will find everything that you missed so far. I’m using iPhone for almost half a year now, and I never seen such an amazing phone in my life before. Even if I found some bugs on it, I was able to find a fix for them on the device itself through WiFi and Installer…it’s amazing how many apps you can find for it without searching the net and installing them through activesync or through other methods. Be little more patient and you’ll get an even better iPhone soon…you’ll see.

  43. First, let me put this review into perspective by saying I am used to a RAZR, which provides bluetooth and speech recognition capabilities that I am heavily dependent upon.

First, I have given up my home phone in favor of being all cell. This has caused me to go running around the house looking for my phone when it rings. To solve this problem, I purchased a Panasonic KX-TH1111. This system consists of a base unit that pairs with my cell phone (and my husband’s as well), and allows me to answer and make cell calls from the three cordless satellite handsets that are attached to the KX-TH111. I merely place my RAZR next to the Panasonic base unit and push a button to link them via Bluetooth. Meanwhile, my car, an Acura TL, has a hands-free bluetooth link to the stereo system speakers. My phone connects seamlessly to the car’s handsfree system when I insert the key into the ignition.
The iPhone tries to work with the Panasonic, but really doesn’t. I can’t answer incoming calls on the Panasonic handsets, and when I initiate a call from a Panasonic handset, it automatically transfers to the iPhone after a few seconds and disconnects the Panasonic handset. And now the iPhone doesn’t seem to want to pair with my car any more.

After some research. I have discovered that I am not the only iPhone customer having trouble in an Acura, and the kind folks at the Apple store have assured me that they too hope this problem will soon be fixed, as it seems to have been introduced in a recent software upgrade.

Meanwhile, Panasonic has announced a new version of their bluetooth-linked phone, model KX-TH1211. I am holding my breath hoping that it will work with my iPhone.

Oh yes, the speech recognition. My Verizon RAZR was able to recognize commands like “Call Don”, where the name was NOT recorded, but just typed in as a contacts entry. This feature was a great boon to me before the Acura handsfree feature. It is actually a perfect match for a bluetooth earpiece; just push the button on your ear and speak the name without taking your eyes off the road. I note that the AT&T version of the RAZR does not have this really handy feature, nor does the iPhone.

So, I’m trying to make myself happy by looking at my pictures and listening to my music on the iPhone. I’d rather have the great telephone features offered by Verizon on their RAZR.

  46. I have a jailbroken iphone I bought in the US and brought to Spain. I really love it, the interface, the keyboard, the browser…For the most part things are going smoothly except:

    1. No 3G. In Spain, there aren’t a lot of places with Wi-Fi.

    2. My computer thinks the iphone is a camera, and it won’t sync with itunes.

    3. Even if you turn off key click sounds, it still makes a sound when you dial.

    4. The suggestions when writing text ARE annoying, especially when I am witing in Spanish! (As for the period, though, if you hit Space twice, it inserts a period)

    5. I like my calls organized: incoming, outgoing, missed; not all together.

    6. I think all functions should be usable in the panoramic mode. It’s really cool, and it would make typing easier.

    7. The battery problem: Is it possible to replace the battery yourself like on ipods?

    8. Yes, being able to have text messages time-stamped, and being able to delete just one out of a conversation would be nice…

  47. * Can’t delete all text messages, have to delete them one at a time.

    * Can’t delete a single text message alone from a “conversation”. i.e. if you have 10 text messages from the same person, you can not delete one, you must delete them all.

    * No Quicknotes, a way of inserting commonly used text into emails or text messages. My favorite one that I miss is “Starbucks?” that I use to send to some friends all the time.

    * No way to create folders and move photos from the camera roll through the phone. Perhaps that is possible through iTunes, don’t know. Should be accessible through the phone.

    * No voice recorder.

  51. I agree with most of your points. Thanks for making this list. Texting to multiple people is a big one for me. There are third party apps for that now. I’m sure there will be more third party apps and apple updates to address most of these issues.

Other points like video cam and external HD function are nice to have, but the bottom line is- it’s a phone!

  52. The thing I noticed about some of the complaints is that some of these are problems with other phones too. I think there is about a 50/50 chance of getting a phone that does not leave a time or date stamp on text messages anymore. That’s what I’ve noticed with the phones that I have had. Same with the lack of backspace option on the calculators. Although this is really making me rethink getting an iPhone. I may stick with my N95 or get a Palm Treo when it’s time for a new phone.

  55. I am absolutely befuddle with such a pedantic phone. In other words… I think they left out a good chunk of stuff.

Word is as we can all search and see is that there is a major update scheduled for Feb. of 2008.

This will mainly focus on a search app for the widget section that will help users find stuff quicker… well that doesnt seem to be a problem for me. Quickness may be key in a specific situation but I could care less if I have a find app… I know where everything is… I put it there!

My biggest complaint about the theirPHONE is it’s OS design and flaws from text to video to java and flash.

It is already the future and the web master community knows how important it is to support for flash… um… like many of the videos on the web that are to be played using quicktime… the same app on the Apple website… Now, you can view the videos on the apple website sure… but not all quicktime videos on the web.

This can be explained by something as small as time restraints, smooth and seamless use, and programming. Apple didn’t want all these apps cluttering up the initial release JUST IN CASE the phone had major unseen problems.
Now they can sit back without deadlines and write specific code to improve what is there already. Plus adding those softwares choices to the first release will significantly slow things down from web browsing to downloading via itunes, to even your ipod videos…

Stupid reason to with hold what we want but a smart choice nonetheless.

Now, I am a booking agent/promoter/musician in a fast past market with gigs and dates and deadlines and people to inform and day to day hour to hour tasks that must be dealt with or else I lose a lot.

What do I want for Crimmus? FREAKING MASS TEXT!!!

I have 11 associates who I continuously need to text the same message. Lame!
And who has email attached to their ars!?

    Besides me.

    Peace cats

Cannot purchase ringtones, all you can do is pay $0.99 to make a ringtone in iTunes however it must be a song that is purchased through iTunes, and one that is actually compatible.

VERY IMPORTANT: I NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE COMMENTED ON HAVING TO SWITCH KEYBOARDS TO GET TO THE PERIOD.

HIT THE SPACE BAR TWICE. IT WILL INSERT A PERIOD FOLLOWED BY A SPACE!

  60. Can’t disable auto correct (spell check). It is a very nice feature, as long as the text you’re typing is English. Having to text a lot on a different language, the auto correct feature is extremely annoying – slows you down – as it pops up for almost every single word you type.

  64. they should figure out something to allow phone call interrupting EDGE sessions on web/email, since you cannot have both simultaneously.

for instance, if you are at the airport or some other place checking emails or surfing the web, people calling in at that moment go straight to voicemail. you have no record of a missed call; you only know that someone called IF they decided to leave a voicemail.

that’s pretty bad in my opinion. i mean my Samsung D807 operates on GPRS and when using media net, if you get an incoming call it prompts you and allows to to accept or reject. it’s annoying that the iphone can’t do the same thing — i pretty much avoid using web or email when i’m out in case i get an important call.

  67. 1. Can’t copy & paste text.
-This can be very handy in some situations.

    2. Except for the first and last SMS messages in a session, iPhone text messages lack timestamps.
-Yeah this is a slight problem, not a huge deal though.

    3. iPhone’s Safari browser does not support Java or Flash, so you can’t watch videos or see parts of certain websites.
-This is supposed to be on it’s way.

    4. The on-screen keyboard can’t be used in landscape mode in applications other than Safari.
-This needs to work in the txt messaging

    5. Vibrate mode for incoming text messages is weak.
-The sounds all together for VM, txt messages, etc are weak! Could we please have the ability to change what sound is played when we get a txt or a VM?????

    6. Incoming text messages appear word-for-word on the screen upon receiving them, which may be a privacy issue for some.
-Yes this is a huge flaw in the design! This happened to me. Nothing personal, but I don’t want ppl seeing my txt (and everyone wants to see my phone)

    7. No Undo function for when you’ve accidentally erased or mistyped text.
-Hmmm isn’t that what the auto correct feature is for (which i must say works GREAT)? And with no copy fucntion you couldn’t select a large amount of text my mistake and accidentally delte it. Don’t understand your complaint here.

    8. Scroll bars don’t appear in text fields in the browser, and there are no arrow keys to maneuver through text.
-Yeah this needs to be fixed.

    9. Can’t save usernames and passwords in Safari.
    -Don’t matter to me.

    10. The YouTube app does not allow you to view or post comments on videos.
-WTF cares about this? Some of your points are sort of petty!

    11. Can’t download or save Word or PDF documents. Why not add a My Documents folder for saving important files?
-Yeah they need a way to d/l and save files.

    12. No spell check feature for web forms.
-Are you that bad of a speller? But yeah their auto correct should work universally throughout the phone.

    13. Can’t send more than one image in an email.
-have not played with this yet?

    14. Photos can’t be edited or removed directly from the iPhone. You have to edit photos on your computer and then resync them.
-The iPhone display is beautiful! But really what type of editing are you going to do on the phone? Give me a break!

    15. The iPhone lacks a Find function for sorting through contacts, e-mails, calendar appointments and notes.
-Yeah can we get something like spotlight.

    16. Can’t update your Facebook status via iPhone’s Safari browser. Facebook is a fast-growing social network, so I’m sure this is a real bummer for a lot of people.
-You are kidding me, you are complaing about this???? Get Real!

    17. No mass edit feature for handling calendar items, notes and e-mails.
    -Not an issue for me.

    18. Can’t search within web pages in the browser.
    -This would be usefull.

    19. Its 3-day, expensive battery replacement plan.
-Yeah, why not just do it like all other cell phones. We are smart enough to replace our own batteries.

    20. Can’t highlight text.
    -Goes back to copy/paste function.

    21. Limited ringtones. Can’t set songs as ringtones.
-You have possible ringtones at your fingertips in the iPod, but can’t assign them. Thats weak. I want to see this with an option to “crop” a song down to like a 5 -10 sec clip so you could assign just a part of the song.

    22. Difficult to rewind and fast-forward through long audio and video files (like audiobooks and TV shows or movies).
-havent found this to be a problem.

    23. No AIM or iChat application.
    -doesn’t matter for me.

    24. One too many steps to dial a contact.
    – There are only two steps. My old phone had about the same. (But where is voice dial!!!!????

    25. Headphone jack is incompatible with non-Apple headphones.

  71. Good list. I have some more to add:
    1. Bluetooth is always on/discoverable – I am sick of every device wanting to connect. Once I connect my device, I should be able to turn off discovery & be able to use my connected devices (like I could in my old PDA phone).
    2. I would like to customize the desktop WITHOUT hacking it!
    3. There is no Picture or video messaging!! This is a REAL pain. Even cheap $29 phones have this!
    4. The camera does not zoom, and there is no video capability.
    5. Missing the accent symbol (some names do use it!)
    6. Some screens need back buttons, not exit, but back.
    7. Some items need single deletions, not ALL.
    8. Cannot send multi-receipent text messages.
    9. The sync of pictures is horrible. All pictures have to be in the same directory that you want on the phone. You should be able to select pictures from multiple locations.
    10. Cannot individually delete music either (you covered pictures).
    11. No games – only available via Internet (does not help when flying, or no service is available!!!)

And if iPhone has so many bugs, I need to think again to spend $600!!!

3)Can’t send an attachment with email (except a single photo, but it has to be initiated from the photo!)
4)Needs a period and comma on the main keyboard!
5)The entire system should work in landscape mode if desired.
6)The calendars should be color-coded and be in catagories as they are in iCal.
7)Tasks, memos, and to do lists should be included as they are in iCal (and Outlook).
8)There should be a removable memory card!
9)It should sync via Bluetooth also.
10)You should be able to select a “home” page for Safari instead of it always opening the last page you visited and the option of not always opening another window (so that you don’t end up with too many windows open at one time, and then having to manually close them).

  77. -EDGE is incredibly slow for its internet service. 3G would have been way faster. For $600 you could at least have updated internet capabilities.

-iPhone lacks features that cheaper phones have: sending picture messages, removable batteries, video camera, as stated before, no instant messaging.

-My girlfriend bought one and is now returning it; it really sucks that apple hyped this phone up and practically screwed thousands of people who dislike the phone and now have 2year contracts with ATT&T. Bummer, but im very glad I read reviews before buying one my self-who is/was a big apple fan.

  78. Scott you’re right, the phone is missing some key features. But I think the reason people are willing to pay a premium for iPhone is because of HOW it does what it does, and not so much because of WHAT it actually does, though that’s important too.

  81. Let me first say that I love the IPhone even with its flaws. I bought the device with full understanding of some of its limitations…I had a Blackberry 8800 and I never even used half the stuff on it…so to me the IPhone does exactly what I want it to do…it just does it in a very cool package.

Now my one comment would be that it would have been nice if Apple would have let people know about what to do when the phone locks up…as mine did a few days ago, without having to go to the website to find out. Oh…by the way if this happens simply press the home key and the on/off key at the same time for 10 seconds…the phone will reboot. That little bit of info should have been in the box with the instructions.

  86. I think this list is absolutely and obsurd. The iPhone is not a miniature computer. Half of the problems you describe are things that Microsoft Word supplies, not a phone. Step 15 and 24 are the only clearly plausible advancements they could make on the iPhone. Everything else you ask for is absurd.

However, this is an amazing device!! It has abilities that are revolutionary on a phone or any other handheld gadget.
The only complaint that I have is not meantioned here, which is the sound quality.
The sound quality of the phone as well as the external speaker is lacking. This is suprising for an “iPod” included device.
I compared the speaker quality to my other phone (Rzr) and the Razer was far superior.
Put better audio quality on this device and the rest of the commetns are irrelevent!

  91. Scott, thanks for your comment. All the cell phones I’ve owned in the past have displayed the time that each individual text message was received.

What I meant about the text messages appearing on the screen is this: say you’re showing someone your phone, and you receive a message that you’d rather remained private, the person using your phone will see the content of the message pop up on the screen. I think you should be allowed the option to be alerted when you receive a text message but not have the content of the message display on the screen.

About the text fields, take the comment box on my site for example. Once you write a long message, a scroll bar appears on the screen letting you maneuver up and down through your text, right? Well Safari on the iPhone doesn’t display a scroll bar, so the only way to scroll is to use the magnifying glass, which is very hard to do.

I’d love to see voice dialing (safer for driving) and the iPhone’s camera could use some work, I agree.
